5 Tips for Becoming a More Confident Speaker

Known as glossophobia, the fear of public speaking affects approximately three quarters of the population. Everyone’s looking at you, you’re expected to sound interesting, and the pressure is enormous. Fortunately, there are ways to become more self-assured when you’re giving a presentation for a crowd. Here are five tips for improving your confidence when speaking.

1. Plan ahead

While more experienced speakers can go off the cuff, most of us are at our best when we plan a presentation carefully. That means brainstorming subtopics, and working on a captivating introduction and satisfying conclusion. If you know you’ve got a good plan for your speech, you’ll never have to worry about forgetting what comes next.

2. Practice, practice, practice

Lots of practice will boost your confidence when it’s time to present in front of a crowd. Get your speech down on paper, though not word for word, lest you feel tempted to read it. Then, rehearse, either on your own or with a trusted colleague.

3. Engage your audience

You can lessen the terrifying nature of a presentation by turning your speech into more of a conversation. Ask for participation, whether it’s a show of hands in response to a general question or inviting questions and feedback.

4. Be aware of your body language

Nonverbal communication is just as loud as verbal communication. Stand up straight, smile, and avoid crossing your arms since this is a closed sign. In short, believe in yourself!

5. Watch yourself

How do you know if your speeches are a success? Well, you’ll get feedback from others, but it’s a good idea to see for yourself. Record your speeches and presentations, and then take the time to watch them. Pay close attention to things that could use improving, it’s a tremendously valuable learning tool.
